Investing wisely is critical

Making decisions about how to invest your assets is a very critical part of planning for your future.

  • If you want to know more about investment decisions or how much money you will need for retirement, one of the more helpful planning tools available is the Ballpark Estimate Site from the American Savings Education Council.
  • The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has practical guidelines on hiring a financial planner or broker.
  • The Minnesota Department of Commerce, which licenses investment advisors and securities agents, also has some do's and don't when hiring an investment advisor or securities agent.
  • If you want to know about the basics of investing, the Alliance for Investor Education provides information about investing, investments and the financial markets among current and prospective investors of all ages.
  • If you already know the basics of investing, the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) is an independent, not-for-profit organization formed for the purpose of assisting individuals in becoming effective managers of their own assets through programs of education, information, and research.
  • The University of Minnesota Extension Service has brochures on retirement and investing.  They are available on the internet for free or from your local extension office for a fee.
