The Odyssey will host space for a limited number of pre-conference intensives that may be used by DHS staff for program planning or training sessions. Pre-conference intensives are scheduled for:

Family Meetings Gone Awry: Strategies and Options for Working with Challenging Families Health and human services professionals working with family caregivers and older adults. These individuals will have an understanding of eldercare issues, family dynamics and some experience conducting family meetings.

Session Description:  This workshop will provide advanced skills for working more effectively with families on resolving eldercare issues. It will address changing perspectives and priorities of older adults and how it impacts what they want from families, family dynamics and communication. Techniques for shifting communication styles, staying "on track" with goals and shared decision making. Basic mediation skills for guiding families as they struggle with decision making with/for an older adults. Small group work and methods on practicing mediation skills will be part of this session.

Fees: $40.00 for session. No fee for persons registered for the Age & Disabilities Odyssey conference. Training is designed to meet continuing education credits for the MN Board of Nursing and MN Board of Social Work.

Session Description: This session continues the work on priority issues that are common to the breadth of disability group leaders and aging services leaders that were identified at the March 5-6, 2009 Summit meeting in St. Paul: regulations, LTC financing, health care, direct support professionals, technology and others.  Progress reports from work groups, review of the results of the legislative session and emerging issues will all be included.

Building Communities for a Lifetime through Service Provider and Local Government Collaboration Area agency on aging staff, community social services providers, county health and human services and local government representatives.

Session Description: During this session we will explore two cutting-edge Communities for a Lifetime initiatives in Minnesota: the Vital Aging Commission in Olmsted County and the Nurturing Our Retired Citizens (NORC) project in St. Louis Park and Hopkins.
Participants in this pre-conference Intensive will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Communities for a Lifetime philosophy
  • Learn about the intent and implications of 2009 Communities for a Lifetime legislation
  • Identify the roles service providers can play in supporting and leading Communities for a Lifetime initiatives and explore the value of collaboration with local governments
  • Receive concrete examples from successful Communities for a Lifetime initiatives as well as tools and resources

Participant handouts will include: 

  • A brand new Transform 2010 publication highlighting Communities for a Lifetime developments across Minnesota
  • A copy of the 2009 Communities for a Lifetime legislation
  • A user-friendly table outlining and comparing various online community planning tools
  • A copy of presenter PowerPoint slides

Fees: There are no participant fees associated with this pre-conference intensive.

Taking the MAZE Out of Funding County case managers who may need a better understanding of all the funding resources that can be used for services.

Session Description

  • Information on medical funding sources available for professionals working with special needs childeren and their families
  • Practical application of the information as it applies to children with special needs and their families
  • Resources so each individual receives the appropropriate services for their individual needs
  • Information on where you as a professional can go to obtain additional assistance to increase cooperation and collaboration for those you serve.

Important: Registration for the pre-conference intensives will be taken by the person whose email address you see after the session descriptions. You must register by sending an email and you will be sent information regarding the pre-conference you have chosen.  The Odyssey is not taking registration for these sessions. 

There will be a continental breakfast in the exhibit hall starting at 7:30 a.m. on Monday morning. August 17.  Pre-conference attendees may take part in those refreshments prior to your intensive.

To submit a pre-conference intensive proposal, please read the instructions below, or fill out the Pre-conference Intensive Instructions form and return to Bev Asher via email at bev.asher@state.mn.us.

Responsibilities of the pre-conference intensive sponsors include the following:

AV equipment * (if additional equipment, other than what is provided, is needed, it is at the cost of the pre-conference sponsor)

  • Continuing education credits
  • Development of content
  • Handouts
  • Notification of attendees
  • Presentation
  • Refreshments **
  • Registration of participants
