Be careful when considering receiving Medicare
covered diabetic supplies through the mail. It may be a convenient service, but you need
to be cautious because some companies are unfairly profiting from this new Medicare
benefit. Here is a summary for what is covered by Medicare and some things to consider
when receiving your supplies by mail.
In order to qualify for reimbursement, a doctor must be treating you for diabetes. If
your claims are approved, Medicare will only help pay for the monitor, up to 100
test strips and lancets per month, and a spring powered device for the lancets.
Medicare may pay for more than 100 test strips and lancets per month if there is
documentation of medical necessity.
If your test strips and lancets are delivered to your home, the supplier must contact
you before they send more. The supplier should not automatically send them to you. If your
deductible has been met, you will be responsible for 20% of the approved amount and
Medicare will pay 80%.
If considering using one of these companies ask these questions:
- How difficult is it to cancel if I am not satisfied?
- Can I reduce the amount of supplies shipped each month if I don’t need them?
- Can I get your terms in writing?
There have been companies filling prescriptions in addition to the diabetic supplies,
including those for medications. There are also many companies advertising that there will
be "no cost to the individual" because they are willing to waive the 20%
copayment. This is not ethical and is considered an abuse of Medicare.
If you are having any problems getting the supplies cancelled or reduced, contact the
Minnesota Durable Medical Equipment Carrier, AdminaStar Federal at (800) 270-2313 or
the Minnesota Health Insurance Counseling Program through the Senior LinkAge LineĀ®
at (800) 333-2433.
Do not knowingly let a company abuse Medicare on behalf of your Medicare number.
Remember, Who Pays? You Pay!
