Minnesota’s Population is Aging

Today, 12.1% of the population is age 65 and older, putting Minnesota at 33 out of fifty states in percentage of elderly (Florida is the highest at 17.6% and Alaska is the lowest at 5.7%). In looking to the future, however, between now and the year 2030 the population age 65+ in Minnesota will be the fastest growing age group in the state. By 2030, older people will constitute 23% of the total state population.

Project 2030 was a statewide initiative to help Minnesota prepare for the social and economic impact of the "senior boom" and the changes that are likely to occur in our communities and businesses. Some of the changes that we can expect include:

  • Increased number and proportion of minority elderly
  • Some parts of the state will have high concentrations of older residents
  • An older labor force in most of Minnesota, and more people working into their 70’s
  • New opportunities for older people to create new roles in their communities
