How can I find, inform my state legislators?

Q:  How can I find out who the policy makers are for my community?

A:  Information about the legislators in your community is just a phone call or a keystroke away. For help in finding your state representative or senator, simply call the House Public Information Office at 1-800-657-3550 or the Senate Information Office at 651-296-0504. You can also obtain contact information for your legislators on the Minnesota State Legislature website at www.leg.state.mn.us/.

Now that you know how to contact your policy maker, what is the best way to get results? Letter writing is the most common method. Here are some tips to help ensure maximum impact:

  • Keep the letter brief (two pages at most).
  • Do not use a form letter.
  • If you are writing about a specific bill, include the bill number and a brief statement on the subject matter at the beginning of the letter.
  • Discuss only one bill or issue in your letter.
  • Be sincere in your letter, and keep it neat.

Phone calls can also be effective. If the legislator is unavailable to take the call (which is likely to occur during a legislative session), feel comfortable leaving a message with a staff member. It is important to make your call brief, quickly get to the point, always be polite and express thanks.
