Will the Board on
Aging be at the Fair?
Q: Will the
Minnesota Board on Aging (MBA) have an exhibit at
the State Fair?
A: Ahhhh…
mini-donuts, Elvis, talent contests, corn dogs,
fried green tomatoes…
It is once again
time for the infamous great Minnesota get-together,
otherwise known as the State Fair. The fair will run
from Aug. 22 to Sept. 2 (Labor Day) at the
fairgrounds in Falcon Heights, located at 1265
Snelling Avenue N. Senior Days are Monday and
Thursday, August 26 and 29, when the admission for
those age 65 and over is $4. Other days during the
fair’s run, tickets are $7 for age 65 and over
except for thrifty Thursday, August 22, when adult
admission is $5. Pre-fair discount admission tickets
will be available for $5 and are valid any day of
the fair. Watch for ticket sales throughout the
state.
The Board is busy
preparing for the big event and its annual exhibit
in the Ramberg Senior Building, located near the
Horticulture Building. The Ramberg Building also
features daily musical entertainment and showcases
arts and crafts made by older Minnesotans.
Senior LinkAge Line®
staff will be available to offer information,
assistance, counseling and referral on a variety of
topics, including: supplemental and long-term care
insurance, prescription drug options, Medicare,
Medicare fraud and abuse, Senior Surf Days
(Internet), housing, chore service programs, in-home
services, caregiver resources and other topics.
Whether you need information/programs for yourself,
a friend, neighbor or a loved one – let us be the
"gateway" to the services you need.
The Outstanding
Senior Citizen Selection will be held on Thursday,
Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell.
This is a highlight of the fair in which Outstanding
Senior Citizens from counties across the state
compete for the title of Minnesota’s Outstanding
Senior Citizen. Also, the state winners of the
Sixth-Grade Essay Contest will read their
compositions about their grandparents or best older
friend.
This year, the MBA
will be collaborating with the Department of Human
Services’ Deaf and Hard of Hearing Division.
