Dive into Senior Surf Days this summer

Q: What does Medicare cover?

Q: How do I recognize Medicare waste, fraud and abuse?

Q: My kids gave me a computer. How can I use it?

Q: Where can I learn more about gardening through the Internet?

Q: Where can I find a Web site to shop for low-cost airline tickets?

A: Older adults give many reasons for wanting to learn about computers and the Internet. They can do just that by attending a free Senior Surf Day facilitated by staff from the Senior LinkAge Line® and State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for Minnesota. Senior Surf Days are held in communities all across the state to introduce Medicare beneficiaries and caregivers to the advantages of computer technology. Senior Surf Days are sponsored by the Minnesota Board on Aging in partnership with the 12 Minnesota Regional Public Library Systems and some community education programs.

A typical Senior Surf Day event includes viewing a short video produced by Microsoft describing the basic components of a computer, learning how to access Medicare information on the Internet, establishing an e-mail address and using the Internet to find what you are looking for. Participants are given an opportunity for some hands-on time to experiment with the mouse and visit various Web sites. Attendees also receive a Senior Surf manual that includes a list of Web sites of interest to seniors, caregivers and Medicare beneficiaries. This enables them to research their areas of interest and make more informed decisions.

Gloria Pudewell, a State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) counselor with the Region Nine Area Agency on Aging in Mankato says, "Senior Surf Days can be a positive intergenerational experience. High school students skilled in the use of the computer enjoy mentoring older adults as they begin to surf the Web."

Senior Surf Days allow the attendees to learn more about the benefits of technology in enhancing their knowledge about Medicare, their community, creativity and employability along with fostering independent living, life-long learning and better communication with family and friends. Call the Senior LinkAge Line® at 1-800-333-2433 to find out when the next Senior Surf Day will be held in your area! Watch your local papers for news of a Senior Surf event near you and dive in! You’ll be "in the swim" in no time.

Quick Senior Link items are taken from frequent calls to the Senior LinkAge Line®, a free service that connects seniors to programs or services that they need. Call 1-800-333-2433 or visit www.mnaging.org.
