Governor appoints four new board members

New MBA members were appointed by Governor Jesse Ventura. They include James Bougie, the Honorable Terry Dempsey, Laurie Laner and Donald Tomsche; and the reappointment of Jayne Hager Dee, Larry Fortner and Beth Nelson.

James Bougie, Afton, has held numerous positions in the defense industry, including working at the Department of Defense and the Defense Systems Division at Unisys. He has also owned a variety of small businesses. Bougie replaces Roger Boatman.

Donald Tomsche, Oakdale, recently retired after 41 years of employment with the State of Minnesota, including 35 years with the Department of Corrections, where he was a prison warden and deputy commissioner. He is vice chair of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons. Tomsche will complete the four-year term of Carolyn Tasker, who resigned.

Laurie Laner, Minneapolis, is president of Financial Designs Inc. in St. Louis Park; was president and chairperson of the International Association of Financial Planning; and has been an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota, teaching a program on retirement planning and employee benefits for certified financial planners. Laner replaces Mary Koep.

The Honorable Terry Dempsey, New Ulm, retired last month as a Fifth Judicial District trial court judge and is a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, where he served as House Minority Leader. Dempsey replaces Marla Betsy Siegel-Garcia.

Dee, Northfield, is the Dakota County Extension Director with the University of Minnesota Extension Service. She has served on the Board since January 2001.

Fortner, Duluth, is editor and publisher of The Senior Reporter magazine, producer of six regional senior resource guides, coordinator of the Duluth Aging Network, vice president of the Elder Circle Board in Itasca County and president of the Elder Services Network of Northern St. Louis County. He has served on the Board since July 1997.

Nelson, Maplewood, is the manager of strategic alliance public programs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. She was the director of an Area Agency on Aging and worked at the office of Ombudsman for Older Minnesotans. Nelson has served on the Board since January 2001.

All terms expire on January 2, 2006, except for Tomsche whose appointment extends to January 5, 2004.

The MBA develops, coordinates, evaluates and administers federal and state funds for programs for the aging; makes grants to 13 Area Agencies on Aging and non-profit agencies; and serves as an advocate for older persons. The Board consists of 25 members appointed by the governor.
