Spotlight – May 2002

May is Older Americans Month

In tribute to the American family, the Minnesota Board on Aging (MBA) and the Area Agencies on Aging are joining the rest of the nation in observing May as Older Americans Month.

The theme for the month-long observance is America – A Community for All Ages.

"This theme emphasizes the important role that older persons play in our communities. Older people are caregivers to their families as well as active volunteers who contribute hundreds of hours each week to the vitality of their communities," stated Kenneth Moritz, MBA Chair.

"The intergenerational family is the strength of our nation," according to James Varpness, MBA Executive Director. "We must work to ensure that health and human services reach across generations, where we have young people working as volunteers to assist our elders, and at the same time, we have older adults working with youth."
