Expansion of transportation program aids independence

Through the recent expansion of the services in the Alternative Care/Elderly Waiver (AC/EW) transportation program, eligible older Minnesotans will have more opportunities to become more actively involved in their own communities.

In the past, transportation offered through the programs was extended to services that were included as covered services through the AC/EW programs, such as adult day care.

With the expansion of the service, older adults in the programs will be able to access opportunities for enhancing their community living experience. Now, seniors who are eligible to participate in the programs can get involved in other activities, such as those provided at a senior center.

The change, which went into effect this past summer, was made to help support the ability for AC/EW clients to actively participate in their own community and to enhance the quality of their community living experience. It’s a direction the department is taking to emphasize community-based supportive living services that enable older adults to have choices where they want to live.

Older adults who are interested in seeing if they qualify for the program should go through their county or tribal long-term care consultation program to see if they meet program eligibility requirements in regard to needs, income and asset guidelines. Information about the program is also available by calling the Senior LinkAge Line® at 1-800-333-2433.
