Where can I get help for my energy bills?
Q: I cannot afford to heat my
home. Are there any programs that can help me?
A: There are several statewide programs available
that help to pay for energy costs or help with improvements to your home that
will result in reduced energy costs.
The Energy Assistance Program provides
financial assistance for households who need help paying heating bills.
This financial assistance is federally funded
through the U.S. Department of Human Services for households who meet certain
income guidelines. Households with the lowest incomes and highest fuel costs
will receive the highest grants. These funds are available for renters or for
homeowners.
The Weatherization Assistance Program reduces
energy costs for households by making improvements to the home that will reduce
energy costs. Some of the services available include participant education;
energy audits to evaluate the home’s energy usage; exterior wall and attic
insulation; air infiltration and bypass sealing; test, repair, and/or
replacement of home mechanical systems to ensure efficiency and safety.
Only one application is needed to apply for
both programs. The income guidelines are:
| Household size |
3-month income |
| 1 |
$4,586 |
| 2 |
$5,997 |
| 3 |
$7,408 |
| 4 |
$8,819 |
The Reach Out For Warmth Program assists
households who do not qualify for either of the above programs and meet a higher
set of income guidelines.
This program is funded through corporate and
individual donations matched by federal funds. This program also provides
additional help when federal funds are inadequate to meet household needs. The
income guidelines are:
| Household size |
3-month income |
| 1 |
$5,503 |
| 2 |
$7,196 |
| 3 |
$8,890 |
| 4 |
$10,583 |
