New prescription bill advances

Help in managing the costs of prescription drugs for a greater number of older Minnesotans is closer to becoming a reality after the House of Representatives’ HF 411drew broad bi-partisan support.

This legislation would require the Minnesota Board on Aging to establish and administer a prescription drug assistance program. This program would make drug benefits available to people who need help with their prescription drug expenses by establishing a clearinghouse. The bill would make available more comprehensive help in determining enrollment eligibility in the Patient Assistance Programs (offered by pharmaceutical companies) through the Senior LinkAge Line® using a software application.

This bill would also require that people who are identified as eligible for both the Patient Assistance Program and the state-funded Prescription Drug Program would be informed about the Patient Assistance Program option and referred to it. Funding for the program would be shifted from the state funded Prescription Drug Program. The bill was referred to the Committee on Health and Human Services Policy.
