increasingly difficult for an elder to remain at home. Minnesota communities have a
variety of housing options to meet the needs of seniors.
Senior housing
Residents rent an apartment in a complex that has a common dining area. Residents may
register to eat one or more meals a day with other tenants.
Assisted living
Seniors may choose housing options that offer assisted living services.
- Apartment buildings where tenants rent their own apartment.
- Board-and-lodging establishments where elders rent a single room with or without their
own bathroom.
- Corporate Adult Foster Care which employs caregivers around the clock to care for and
supervise residents.
- Family Adult Foster Care where homeowners make arrangements for persons to move in,
manage the household, make meals and also may provide personal care assistance. The
resident may receive additional home care services in these settings. Oversight is 24
hours a day.

Nursing Homes
Nursing homes and board-and-care homes offer 24-hour supervision and an extensive range of
services. They also have more regulations than other housing options. Nursing home care
generally is less expensive than 24-hour home care; however, there is a depletion of an
elder’s assets over time.
