Making choices, arranging care
Aging is an opportunity as well as a challenge.

Few of us want to give up our homes and our independence. But there may come a time when it is in our best interest – and the interest of our families – to be in an “alternative care” setting.

Making these decisions is not easy. The Minnesota Board on Aging supports a variety of resources to help seniors and their families make educated, appropriate choices.

  • What are my options?
Community resources assist seniors who wish to remain independent and in their homes.  The Counties provide Long-term Care Consultation services to seniors and their families free of charge.
  • What other types of housing exist?
Whether you need more assistance or simply want to feel safer in a supervised environment, you have many options when it’s time to move to alternative housing.
  • Concerned about the cost of care?
    Financial assistance options are available.
  • What about the caregivers?
Is there help or relief for families who invite their elderly to live with them? Caregivers need support.
  • Is there any way to prepare for long-term care?
Yes, by purchasing long-term care insurance.
  • Who is my advocate?
    Minnesota has an Ombudsman Office.
